Your Newborn Session

Newborns are by far my favorite subjects to photograph. They are tiny and precious for only the blink of an eye.  I want to capture those first moments of your newborn baby in photographs you can treasure for a lifetime.

Newborns are best photographed between 5-12 days new. This is the time when they are most sleepy and will curl easily.  After 2-3 weeks of age they don’t stay asleep as easily and tend to start developing baby acne.  While I can still photograph your baby during this time, I most likely will not be able to get the squishy, curly poses. But that’s okay because I will surely capture some beautiful images of your baby!

WHAT TO BRING – As you well know, babies pee and poo on everything, so don’t worry! I have plenty of pads and wipes on hand and I wash all my blankets after every session anyway, so it’s ok.  I want you to be able to sit back and relax and enjoy the moments.  Feel free to bring a book, snacks, or anything you’d like.  You’re going to be here a while! I will have a heater on in my home studio for the second half of your session (when baby is no longer swaddled), so please dress in layers.  Since babies are photographed with no clothing the second half of your session, I need to keep it nice and toasty for them so they can sleep and stay comfortable. I usually have my studio between 80-85 degrees at this time.

Pacifier – even if you are not sure they will take it, or they hate it.  So many babies take a pacifier in the studio because they want to be soothed.  It can be very helpful during the shoot.

Food – If Mom is nursing, I suggest nursing right before coming to the session. Sometimes topping them off when you arrive is also helpful.  This will relax and calm the baby.  Also, since you will be in the studio anywhere from 2-3 hours, feel free to bring yourself food, or a magazine/book to read.  If you are bottle feeding, please bring an extra bottle of formula.  Even if baby is fully fed, they will generally have an extra feeding at some point.  This will not ruin their schedule, but you will find it will comfort them.

Nursery items – You are welcome to bring stuffed animals, silver rattles, or other items that you would like incorporated into the session.

Clothing – Since I generally photograph newborns without clothing, you don’t have to worry so much about bringing any.  If you do have a favorite outfit and would like to bring it, I will be happy to use it.  Make sure to dress your baby lightly when coming to the studio.  Avoid clothing over the head, socks, or headbands.  A zip-up onesie/sleeper is best.  If I will also be photographing Mom, Dad, and/or sibling(s) your clothing should match in tone and try to keep things solid and simple.  Stripes or patterns will be distracting and take away from the photo. Neutral and pastel tones work best for the ivory backdrop I use for photographing families.

Every baby has their own personality and that is what I love to capture!  I look forward to photographing some precious memories of your new baby for you!
